NWGS Student Poster Session, May 18, 2010

          NWGS will hold it annual student poster session from 5:40 to 6:30 PM at its regularly scheduled meeting on May 18, 2009 at the Talaris Conference Center.

            All NWGS members are hereby requested to motivate posters from universities, 4-year colleges, community colleges, and high schools.

            Inquiries should be directed to Lars Gilmour (lazarus@u.washington.edu).

 GROUND RULES:

Topics: any geo-science topic, including biographies of noted geoscientists of the PNW

 Categories: Posters will be judged in 4 categories:

1)      high school students (need instructor approval),

2)      community college and “Geol 101” students of  4-year colleges and universities,

3)      upper class students  (i.e., geo-minors and geo-majors) of  4 year colleges and universities, and

4)      graduate students.

Eligibility: REGISTRATION NOW CLOSED.  T

Criteria of Evaluation: Two or more unidentifiable (to the students) NWGS members without present academic affiliation will judge the posters.  They will evaluate the layout of the poster, the scholarship involved, and, importantly, the student’s oral response to questions.           

Limitations:  No more than two entries per category per institution can be accommodated, unless prior approval from the chair has been obtained, otherwise if more than two entries are available, we expect the relevant instructor to select the best two for the competition.

Prizes:

1)      $100 for first prize in each category,

2)      50$ for second prize in each category,

3)      Dinner for all contestants, and

4)      One year of free student membership in NWGS for all contestants.
