SUMMARY:December Meeting 2022
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Tom Bush\, Pierce College PuyallupTitle: Stratigraphic and Structural Controls of Landscape Development\, San Rafael Swell and Capitol Reef National Park Areas\, South-Central Utah \nAbstract: The San Rafael Swell and Capitol Reef National Park lie within the northwest portion of the Colorado Plateau\, a vast roughly circular area centered on the four-corners of Utah\, Colorado\, New Mexico\, and Arizona. This region attracts millions of visitors per year to the numerous public lands who marvel and the scenic landscapes\, and for good reason. Rock formations in the plateau range in age from Proterozoic to Paleogene and record a long and complex geologic history. Although igneous and metamorphic rocks are pre-sent throughout the region\, the landscapes are dominated by horizontal to somewhat deformed drab to colorful sedimentary rocks. The mostly horizontal\, colorful strata in many areas are deeply carved\, forming spectacular incised meanders\, deep canyons\, mesas\, buttes\, pinnacles\, stone arches\, and natural bridges. The spectacular landscapes have evolved over the last few million years during uplift of the Colorado Plateau and have been greatly influenced by stratigraphic and structural controls. More specifically\, the interlayering of hard\, resistant strata with soft\, nonresistant formations\, combined with joint\, fault\, and folding development from several distinct epi-sodes of deformation\, have interacted to create the spectacular geomorphic features of the region. \nThe San Rafael Swell and Capitol Reef National Park areas of south-central Utah are dominated by regional-scale Laramide monoclonal folds that are cored by the resistant\, large-scale\, cross-bedded Triassic-Jurassic Navajo Sandstone. Softer\, non-resistant strata strati-graphically above but structurally below the Navajo have eroded into strike-parallel valleys. Monocline uplift was accompanied by ante-cedent stream development across the Navajo\, forming numerous slot canyons. Prominent sub-regional scale intersecting joint systems and faults have controlled running water pathways to also form slot canyons\, as well as other scenic features such as natural bridges and arches. \nSouth-east-directed view of the Waterpocket Fold\, Capitol Reef National Park\, from Strike Valley Overlook. This Laramide monocline stretches for nearly 100 mi (160 km) throughout south-central Utah and is the primary attraction of the park. The Triassic-Jurassic Navajo Sandstone forms the prominent east-facing dip surface on the right. T. DESCRIPTION:Trip Overview\n\n\n\nWe are blessed in western Washington to have world class ophiolites well exposed around Anacortes on Fidalgo and surrounding islands.  The Northwest Geological Society and AEG Puget Sound are teaming up for a field trip to the Fidalgo ophiolitic mélange.  Led by Dr. John Oldow the trip will include one day of a boat charter to visit beaches and islands with hard-to- access rock exposures and a second day on land.  Your registration subsidizes a limited number of student slots.   \n\n\n\nTrip Leaders\n\n\n\nDr. John Oldow has a distinguished academic career in structural geology at Rice University\, the University of Idaho\, and the University of Texas-Dallas.  He has deep Washington roots as a 3rd-generation Anacortes native\, UW geology graduate\, and current resident of Whidbey Island.  This trip is based on recently published work* with his student\, David Katopody\, who will also co-lead.  The paper presents new insights to the complex structural relationships of the mélange components  based on detailed mapping of hard-to-access exposures\, some of which we will visit. \n\n\n\nCost and Registration\n\n\n\nThe cost of the trip will be $360 per person including\n\n\n\nOpening night banquet and lecture at the Majestic Inn in Anacortes\, September 9Boat transportation on the “sea” day \, September 10Bus transportation on the “land” day\, September 11Box Lunches 9/10 and 9/11Field trip guidebookSubsidy for three student participantsBrown Paper Ticket Fees\n\n\n\nNot included\n\n\n\nLodging though we have room blocksDinner Saturday\, September 10.Transportation to and from Anacortes\n\n\n\nCancellation\n\n\n\nBefore August 12\, 50% refundAfter August 12\, no refunds except:Full refund if we can resell the ticket\n\n\n\nMembership Requirements\n\n\n\nParticipation is restricted to current AEG-Puget Sound and NWGS members only until August 1.  After August 1 we will open to registration to non-member friends and other AEG chapter members.  If you are not current in your AEG membership\, please consider renewing and you can be eligible for priority registration (contact Tom Doe – see below) \n\n\n\nWe have 32 places for the trip based on boat occupancy.  We are splitting the allocated spaces between AEG and NWGS until August 1.  We will have a wait list option\, and if we fill one allocation and not the other\, we will fill unclaimed spaces from the wait list before opening to non-members. \n\n\n\nLodging\n\n\n\nLodging is not included\, but we have reserved blocks of rooms at the Anacortes Inn ($105 per night plus tax) and Majestic Inn ($350/night).  We can arrange room sharing arrangements.  These rates are for double rooms that accommodate two people.  In your registration\, please note whether you want a single\, double with identified roomie (please identify to us by email)\, or double with assigned roomie. \n\n\n\nTransportation to Anacortes\n\n\n\nTransportation to Anacortes on Friday September 9 and the return September 11 will be the responsibility of participants though we can facilitate ride sharing those who would like company\, reduce costs\, and minimize greenhouse gas emissions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJohn Oldow\n\n\n\n\nDavid Katopody and John Oldow\, 2019\, Polyphase brittle and ductile deformation of Late Jurassic ophiolitic basalt-argillite matrix mélange and stratigraphic overlap sequence\, northwestern Washington State\, Gondwana Research\, v. 74\, p. 189-215\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTentative Schedule\n\n\n\nTrip participants will meet for dinner Friday\, September 9\, at 6:00 at the Majestic Inn in Anacortes for a social program and introductory lecture.  On Sunday September 11\, we will wrap up in Anacortes by 4 pm. \n\n\n\nDay 1 (Friday\, 9 September\, 2022)\n\n\n\nMeet in Anacortes; informal presentation and outline of events over drinks and dinner \n\n\n\nDay 2 (Saturday\, 10 September\, 2022)\n\n\n\n08:00  meet at Skyline and board charter boat \n\n\n\n08:15  depart Skyline for Cypress and Vendovi Islands \n\n\n\n09:00  slow pass along eastern Cypress showing major rock units \n\n\n\n09:45  slow pass along Vendovi showing bedded-chert olistoliths in basalt matrix \n\n\n\n10:15  Cypress (3 stops) \n\n\n\n13:30  depart Cypress \n\n\n\n14:15  Alexander Beach and Biz Point:  Gabbro and pillow basalt \n\n\n\n15:15  Rosario and Reservation Heads \n\n\n\n14:30  Hope Island \n\n\n\n17:30  depart to Anacortes \n\n\n\n18:15  arrive Skyline Marina \n\n\n\nDay 3 (Sunday\, 11 September\, 2022)\n\n\n\n08:00  board vans drive to Washington Park \n\n\n\n08:15  Jv peridotite \n\n\n\n09:30  Cap Sante exposure of JKg (Ginnett Formation) \n\n\n\n10:30a  Lakeside Quarry:  contact JKg and Jv \n\n\n\n10:30b  Top of Mount Erie:  plagigranite and panoramic view of the area \n\n\n\n12:30  Ginnett Road (JKg and Jv) \n\n\n\n14:30  Rosario Head and Bowman Bay (Jv) \n\n\n\n17:00  depart for Seattle
