Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What sort of résumé/CV are we looking for? Do I really need to supply one even if there is no geological relevance?
We are looking for general purpose document in order to know a little about your background. If you have a document ready to go, use what you have; you do not need to customize it for us. If you do not yet have a résumé, please use this as a motivation to put together a basic document. Include contact information, school history, jobs you’ve worked, technical or other skills, and any certificates. None of this needs to be relevant to geology. Supplying a document is a requirement for this application.
  2. How long should my written statement be about the impact of NWGS?
A well written paragraph or two. We’d like to know how attending/watching NWGS talks has influenced your thinking about geology. We are not looking for a long piece. If in doubt, pick one talk that was interesting to you and reflect on that.
  3. I’m not sure I’m a great candidate, should I still apply?
Absolutely! We are looking for 2-year and 4-year candidates, students who are taking their time getting their degrees, those who are graduate students, anyone who is studying towards a geo-science related career. Please apply. We can’t give you money if you don’t.
  4. I’m not sure who to list as my departmental contact.
Please give us the name of someone we can contact to verify your enrollment and also talk to if you are selected so that we can disburse the money. This is likely the department Secretary or Office staff for your department. They may have to refer us to other people, that is ok.
  5. Should I wait to turn in the application until my professor has sent the reference letter?
No. Please submit your form as soon as you can so that it is in before the deadline. We will accept reference letters for a short time after the deadline (to give leeway for mail delivery), but your application must be submitted on time.

This form is now closed. Applications were due by June 1st. If you have questions, please contact the secretary at [email protected].

There will be a new round of Scholarships for 2025.
